ARTICLE WRITTEN BY ONYIA EMEKA HARFORD TITLED “THE WORLD’S HAPPIEST DAY OF THE YEAR”

It was recorded that human race were sometimes in the past captives and depended of one or two nations of the world and freedom from this captivity created happiness and changes. These changes bring us to the world happiest day. The world happiest day is a reality as well as a discovery. Tracing these facts as far back as 15th and 16th Centuries till date, we should have marked remarkable events that will ascertain the world’s celebration days. Not limited to United Nations but to include mostly the remote African and Asian Nations and in this case we are using Senegal and Nigeria in West African as two nations to our case study in trends of development that will ascertain changes innovatively and improvement in the economy that created better lives made easy today.

Starting this discussion from 16th Century, which was the period several Europeans nations began sailing frequently to the Coasts of Africa and Indian nations in a voyages of discoveries. On the process, they began conquering and plundering the Islands of Caribbean Sea and mainland of Central and South Americans, and in doing all these, opened new range of adventures and ambitions. Much of this shaped a new pattern of power in Western Europe, and this made itself increasingly felt along the Coast of West African; which is our centre of focus on this article though other big changes occurred in Egypt and North Africa. These, too, formed a new pattern of power; and this likewise affected many of the inland countries of West Africa. All these outside changes were important for futures; counting on the Senegal, the Walloff empire which comprises the Walloff Political system where the growing European’s sea merchants brought their ship to Walloff Coast and Senegal river. A Portuguese report of 1506 says that Portuguese merchants brought horses, cotton, goods, and other manufacturing products for sales here and took slaves and a little gold in exchange is a remarkable tragedy to thank God today for up keeping in development and improvement in the societal values to lives and human  which was little regarded as of then.

Notwithstanding that at first, the Portuguese was in the region of Senegal Coast trading on African slaves in 1440s and later from there they raided the mainland right down to the mouth of Senegal River and beyond seizing prisoners whom they enslaved, and ravaging the coastal country. But by the 16th century there was existing peaceful slave trading partnership between the Portuguese sea merchants and the Kings and Chiefs mainland of Senegal which was already flourishing in different Coastal part of the world as genuine deals and business. Following this slave trend is the migration of the Fulani’s from the Ancient who later spread far across grassland of West Africa with incessant attacks of conquering lands especially the Nomad herdsmen. Entering different part of West African including Nigeria: they were after revenge for real and fancied hurt; even more. The Fulani’s had the habits and culture of living together in a migrated land as well as dominating their affairs. These great changes of 15th and 16th Centuries was later became mild as civilization approaches, the introduction of Western Education by white Colonial masters brighten up some of these ethics which were brought under control till date.

Now, Counting the World’s happiest day is from the day people became free from inhuman and degrading treatments of slavery and incessant attacks of Fulani herdsmen in our society especially in Africa. Now, these days varies from country to country. Nigerian’s happiest day of the year started from 1st October 1960, which is marked as remembrance every year till date. This was the day we became free from leadership of European Colonial Masters; it was a day of freedom from racism and discrimination. Now, we can make our decision and move along as we plan our government and society as we wish. The prevailing western culture is now limited in domineering to our own cultural heritage. Just as Nigeria enjoyed this freedom in 1st October 1960, other nations of the world had their own freedom from slavery. South African that recorded the highest inhumane long lasting slave treatment as well as Apartheid nation has trends of stories and challenges to narrate for such an ugly experience which they finally had their independent on the 11th December 1931 and ends Apartheid with the help of Nelson Mandela on the 4th of April 1994. They were colonized by Britain while Senegal had their independence on the 4th of April 1960 from France as their Colonial Master. Burundi had their independent from Belgium as Colonial master on 1ST July 1962 while Angola had their own independent on November 11th 1975 from Portugal as their Colonial Masters. Now, the six Europeans countries that colonized African countries are France Mostly, followed by Britain, then Portugal, Belgium, Spain and Italy. Italy colonized only Libya and Somalia while Spain colonized only Eq Gunea. Others are colonized by France and Britain with few colonized by Belgium and Portugal.

Now, in conclusion, the World’s happiest day is a day of freedom from racism and independent of foreign nations as well as slave trade and migration of Fulani herdsmen terrorism (incessant attacks as of 16 centuries) which had also erupted in Nigeria again from last year but controlled by the government. With these facts we can ascertain that freedom and happiness begins from independent of nations, personalities, government but dependent on almighty creator of Universe. Thank you.
