THE PREFARABLE USE OF COOKING GAS OVER DPK (KEROSENE) IN NIGERIA

The use of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas also known as cooking gas in Nigeria had been rated low amongst some African countries. In order to reduce, initiate and create healthy environment for citizens, countries like China, Brazil, Indonesian and amongst others had been switched from the use of Kerosene to cooking gas. The correspondent had examined the use of cooking gas as an alternative to kerosene.

According to the correspondent, he said that industrial statistics showed that Nigeria is blessed with over 180 trillion Cubic feet of Gas, and the second largest producer of Gas in Africa and 6th in the world. Despite this issue of gas deposit, the country remains low in the use of Cooking Gas, for instance, depending on the capacity to consume one million metric tanks yearly, they presently consume is about a year  20,000 metric liquid tons of cooking gas. This is a bit service gap which leaves evidence to make no better choices like Kerosene, fire wood, Saw Dust and other forms of energy resources which are considered injurious to human health and the environment.

Although experts had warned that Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK) otherwise known as Kerosene emits suits that is poisonous to the health. Still over 600 billion naira is spent on the purchase of kerosene annually in Nigeria. The federal government is a fix bit to suit the plight of the citizens. 800 billion kerosene subsidy, even is citizenry to spent as much as backs on the product. The greatest is that the scarcity of kerosene had continued to face the challenge across the nation despite bill subsidy payments by the federal government. Due to high demand and shortage in supply of this product, adulteration and other sharp practices shall become warm, as many domestic users speak on their reservation for kerosene.

According to one reporter of the scarcity of this product who said that the product is very costly this days, normally she uses kerosene in cooking but because of the inflation on the product she had pack her cooking stove by the side and purchase Gas Burner and cylinder to start using cooking gas. While still reporting is another female at the scene of the interview said that gas is more preferable to kerosene because it does not emits suit as kerosene will darken your pot and ruffle the whole cooking environment with black charcoal.

Since Kerosene is said to be more injurious to the health, there had been more people and dealers patronizing cooking gas dealers to Kerosene in Nigeria. Some end users of cooking gas explained the advantages of using cooking gas over the use of kerosene for domestic and commercial purposes. According to a cooking gas domestic user who said previously he will pay N2000.00 to fill up his gas  and they see it as expensive but now they don’t see it as expensive since the inflation of kerosene had worsen the whole issues.

The fact remains that in the past due to fire incidences as a result of carelessness, some people find it difficult to make use of cooking gas because of the notion and believe towards it. So this had made residents to shy away from the use of gas, mean while, safety professionals said kerosene can be obtainable as gas if not handled properly.

For safety experts MR. PRINCE NWOSU highlights some safety tips on the use of Gas:
(1)             it is good that you always leave kitchen windows open in case of leakage of gas
(2)             and make sure you keep your children away from cooking gas

Industrial Analyst and energy sector Player MR. CHIAMOS DADA argues that Nigeria has the potential to adequate local gas supply if only the government can be a global industry for proper player participations.

Sector observers believed that it had become imperative for the government to embark on kerosene to Gas campaign by distributing lower capacity Gas cylinders ranging from fate to check on safety of the masses as it is being done in other developing countries like India and Malaysia.
