ARTICLE WRITTEN BY ONYIA EMEKA HARFORD TITLED: THE RISK OF INTERNET BANKING

It is very easy and wonderfully sweet to operate your bank account on the internet; but the risk is more deadly than the advantages. There had been series of recorded events of crime whereby people lost millions of money in diverse currencies online due to carelessness and inexperience in online transaction. But the most baffling issue is that the perpetrators of this act are not far from the victim. There are cases whereby someone far away in India will have access to your local account and transfer everything in seconds. And you begin to imagine: How does this person come to know my password? And how does it happen? The plans that led to that sudden transfer do not start that the same day. If proper investigation should be carried out, you will come to understand that the perpetrators of that duping are within the environment you are living.

This is why the banking sector worldwide should be interlinked so as to trace and track the fraudulent bank account as well as the personalities involved in the crime. EFCC cannot track down these fraudulent personalities without the help of banking sector, the world bank should look into this issue critically and try to harmonize the banking sector all over the world with a common security algorithm for easy detection of financial crime, tracking of the destination account as well as fishing out the perpetrators behind the crime and prosecuting them. And with the permission of Nations of the world, they should promulgate laws that covers online fraudulent act and let it be global laws irrespective of your country. Once you are found and detected by EFCC and World Bank involving in the online financial fraud. You are liable to the same punishment.

I hereby also suggest that if the above idea will be considered and the law promulgated as well as endorsed by the legislative wings of different countries. There will be proper security online. This also entails that the officials of EFCC and World Bank should be at an alert with their sophisticated gadgets to monitor and control the progress of online transaction 24/7.

ARTICLE PRESENTED BY ONYIA EMEKA HARFORD TITLED CYBER TERRORISM IN NIGERIA

If Nigeria must move forward, we should not dim our eyes at Cyber terrorism. It an act of victimizing the innocently unskilled citizens in ICT world through sophisticated use of gadgets which is not necessarily to be authorized for individual usage. The victimization is by having access to the privacy of these ignorant citizens for lack of caution and protection on how to handle computer in information and communication technology world to ensure security of transaction. Just as I said earlier in my previous articles: “Many had been duped online by these cyber terrorist”. They a have many ways to get access to your Personal computer, weather you are online or offline. The issue is that you need to be vigilant to capture the movement on your PC while you are working. These terrorist are not far from your Jurisdiction. Why did I say this? Use the length or distant a WIFI can cover, and trace the attack within that range. We know that Bluetooth cannot go beyond 100 meter. So we consider WIFI first because that is common and latest means to connect with your Broadband or Phone with hotspot. Many had been manipulated through this means and yet they don’t know, even some people airtime and broadband MB are being used by the next neighbor who ceases Wi-Fi to steal them and compromise your system, yet they are not aware because of ignorant of the technology. Now, considering the Wi-Fi connection, these attackers easily get to your computer through this means. The only option to these is to change your broadband if it had been compromised by these hackers and start afresh with encryption key WPA2 which may be hard for any hacker to break.

Our leaders in Nigeria should not neglect this issue before it gets out of hand, because as the society is developing and radical changing taking place, I think the security of the nation should advance with the trend of changes lest they will be left behind. Before they know it these issues will be beyond their control. They should place more concentration and concern on cyber crime. The radical increase of this dramatic error called cyber crime in our society has created a big vacuum to occupy. People have lost a lot of valuable assets and money through electronic media due to Nigerian government lack of concentration on this area as an uncivilized nation. But recently they decided to pass a bill to protect the issue of electronic transaction, but that does not end in passing a bill but in training professionals that will monitor and detect fraud and crime transaction going on 24 hours with sophisticated equipment especially amongst our citizens. If any organization should be Expatriate in this modern transaction technique, I think the government of a nation should be number one with best sophisticated and unbeatable technological gadget and with high skilled and proficient ICT personnel to manage the system.

The worst of this is that individuals should be limited on certain hacking equipment like plug-in to extract information and monitoring devices that connect to private and public individual computers through WI-FI, Bluetooth, WI-MAX etc. causing them harms as well as sharing their privacy through their unprotected files and folder due to lack of technical competency in ICT world.

And I hereby strongly advise that to control Cyber crime in Nigeria, the government need to prohibit private individual from using some sophisticate equipment as well as ban the importation of such gadgets which some professional ICT criminal hackers cease to execute their robbery operation online. Some of this equipment can break companies, institutions and governmental private security codes and hack their secrets. The Practice of online banking in Nigeria are not 100% secured because these so called hackers gets into your privacy like e-mail box and online banking website by monitoring your transactions through sophisticated machine, and that why FIRST BANK PLC has chosen that their customer should reset their password from default and memorize it. And I suggest that CBN will also encourage other banks to follow the same system. Let it be that the passwords you are sending to e-mail of customer are at default for reset by the customers. And when someone login and logout of your bank account through online, their system will alert you on your personal phone number you used to register the account to ensure that you are the one that logged in and logged out, but if they can set it that when someone login the security will alert the individual on phone immediately to know if he is the one that logged in, instead of waiting for the person to logout before they alert the person so that if he or she is not the one, she can alert the bank immediately to block the account before the user will transfer the fund. Through so many ways hackers attacks individuals online. As a result don’t always store important and secret information on your hard disk and document, always make sure that the desktop computer system or laptop you bought has a WI-FI control button where you can turn it on or off for security purpose, because this is the main area they will cease to victimize your computer system or an individual. Just as said earlier in my previous article that firewall security software should be installed along with antivirus, antispyware and antimalware software. System security is utmost important if not you will lose assets and properties very dear to you to others people in your neighborhood, and before you use any computer and laptop for important issues; ensure the security of that laptop or computer.

The one hacking and controlling your computer system is not farther than Wi-Fi transmission range which is about maximum of 300 meter length in distance depending on the standard, with different standards of frequency and speed according to the International Electrical and Electronic Engineer (IEEE). An Unencrypted Broadband settings that work with Wi-Fi are easily Penetrated by intruders because Wi-Fi  accept wireless connection as a result I recommend strong new configuration setup of new network and  a new broadband connection with higher quality protocol setting like WPA2 Key which is harder for the Hackers to crack the security codes. Some of us cannot understand this security setup, if you are such please always turn off your Wi-Fi when it not in use and use Ethernet connection which is more secured to your internet connection.

Computer without a wireless (Wi-Fi) control switch or button should not be introduced into Nigeria. The Wi-Fi control button should be setup in a way to eliminate intruders, and Cyber rats. And no user should use the gadget without proper set up. Finally Nigeria should set up a monitoring Cyber crime detection committee like EFCC to work with Nigerian Communication Committee (NCC) to fight Cyber Crime in Nigeria as well as protect our image outside the world.

A lot of report that people who has paid for Electricity Distribution Meter has not be issued the gadget and as a result so many of monthly bill are inflated .This is perhaps the general scenario across the federation, electricity distribution are many for the meters but distribution company found it very difficult to meet the demand. In the power sector the problem is what is described as crises in the implementation of multiyear carried order. Originally intended by the government to equip the power situation under MIKY 2015, the fixed charges had been abolished to deem fit for competitive market rate is a protector coverage for the poor power consumers. According to the acting chairman of the Nigeria Electricity Regulation Commission (NEC), DR. ANTHONY AKA delighted principle also provided for the flexible use of procuring the meters with the payment for the equipment by the consumers and refund by the distribution company later.

According DR. ANTHONY AKA  he said that all consumers who paid for the Meter and could not wait for the appointed time are entitle to receive their refund amount the paid, but those who can wait should exercise patient for the Meter. However, the dispute has appeared to made a failed to meet the expected target as the situation resorted lively to use of the estimated disc for power consumption. The NEC acting chairman agreed that discuss is not at the moment and that the regulatory free work is taking care of that.

According to the consumers interviewed, they said that EEDC should provide Meter for their proper consumption of electricity, to compare the old analog bill inflated to their disadvantage. Electricity Demand allow only the discus to restore meters. But to add to their knowledge to make new things similar with the procurement of handset as obtainable mechanical sector. The NEC acting Chairman explained that Independent Meter Provider cannot be the solution.

The Minister of Power works and Housing MR BABATUNDE FASHIOLA has reassured Nigerian that the current policy on the power sector make it one of the best grading.  Taking into consideration the argument in all angles, they said the possible provision of Meter may continue for a while but one question I want to ask is to whose advantage remains such?
