The
basics law constitutional age requirement for contesting elective offices in
the country is currently before the national Assembly. This is generating lots
of interests amongst youths in the country who call for reduction in the age
qualification for the office president from 40 -30 years.
According
to reporter from National Assembly who said that the current bill in the
national assembly seeks to lower the constitutional age require to contest for
election in Nigeria which is sponsored by member representing OSHODI ISOLO member federal constituency
in the house of representative MR. TONY IWULU
who said that in section 65, 106,131, and 177 of 1999 constitution. The bill is to
create room for you to participate actively in political process so far. people
have the opinion that this bill passed into Law would allow for political
inclusiveness while others have argued that it will eschew mediocrity.
Other
example abound in the countries of the world such as United State of America
which allowed for anyone seeking to contest for the office of the president to
be 35 years while in United Kingdom 18 years and above is set aside for anyone
contesting for any elective office in the country. Now, the question is what
does this bill pass into Law portend? It is for the growth of democracy and the
Nigerian youth ready to take up the utmost responsibility to lead the nation.
True
respondent MR. TONY IWULU have the
opinion that failure to pass the bill will lead to political alienation of the
youths in the country. Director of some centres for development studies
University of Uyo DR EDEM FRANK and
executive director Women United for economic empowerment MRS. IYOBOM EDEM who both
supported the idea also advocated for mentorship of the youths. According to
them, they said that the youths of this country should be ready but the
requirement for leadership in this country is not even rich in terms of
education which is lower in standard as regard the political outfit of the
nation Nigeria. By mentoring according to MRS.
IYOBOM EDEM, who said that we should bring the youths on board if the
leadership of the government needs mentoring, for
them to know what should be done as the leaders of the country Nigeria.
EME ELEKWA and IDARA
EKPEYOM said that if the bill is being passed into law, it will bridge God-Fatherlism
in the country. According to them, they said that they are not sure that youths
are ready to take this higher responsibility to the nation as they are
inexperienced. And as the bill passes through process in National Assembly,
many political spectators have suggested the need to opened up a discuss and
place it in the public domain for deliberation by all in the country to reach a
common ground for well being of the people of the country Nigeria.
