WASTE MANAGEMENT ISSUES IN NIGERIA: A CASE STUDY OF OSUN STATE IN NIGERIA

Waste Management had been the major challenges confronting state capital nationwide in Nigeria. According to reporter from Oshogbu the  Osun State capital in Nigeria who narrated their own side of story: the walk on of the state capital reveals it is a city that is stumped on right of the road dump site located in the conspicuous, however, its refuse indiscriminately dumped on the road in the major highways on daily basis. This practice is high in many of more markets are located including ODABAOGBONO, ALEKWODO and amongst others.

Investigations shows that some of the residents bring their waste late in the night and very early in the morning under the cover of darkness to dump on the road side. This practice continues unabated despite the availability of services of private waste collectors, who regularly visit the neighborhoods to collect the wastes, and at the implement of five hundred naira per month. Many Nigerians caught a secondary school age boy while attempting to dump a loaded bag of Waste around 9.00 in the night along DUOGOLUWA ABILI highway. According to the young boy who said that his mother asked him to drop the waste along the way because there was no provision made for them to dump their refuses seem justified to the listeners.

Another resident MR. NANKA KOLAORE added that the cost of expense on private collectors at the rate of five hundred naira per month on waste management was a difficult task for some families with low income to maintain. According to MR. NANKA KOLAORE, he said that there is no way you can compare a family with children and a bachelor/spinster who does not have liabilities to afford the same amount despite the availability of the money.

From the solution mapped out, dumping waste in the middle of the road was in compliance with the government directives when the new waste management policy was introduced, according to waste management authority personnel who said that the government had directed them to do so but stopping them now might be very difficult due to the economic challenges facing the country.

The general Manager of the Osun state Waste Management Agency AHLJI. ILADO ABDUL GANIO confirmed that government introduced the park ways or road maiden in order to mobilize the people when the policy was newly introduced. AHLJI. ILADO ABDUL GANIO also told the people to patronize the registered private waste collectors than dumping the refuse as specified since it is polluting the environment. According to him he said that they have ordered the people of the residence to patronized the newly private waste collectors who are currently in partnership with the government, negotiate with them for a token and they will pick your waste and throw away, and  asked them not to dump refuse outside their gates by the road side.

AHLJI. ILADO ABDUL GANIO said anyone caught dumping waste by the roadside will be prosecuted by Osun state Waste Management Agency.
